Competence 1.6 Note for teacher: 

In this lesson the students should recognise the role of Government and its different agencies in the community and understand how taxes 
collected by the government are utilised for promotion and facilitation of business and economic activities.

Have you seen the following people at work ? 
1. Policeman 
2. Ticket-collector 
3. Soldier 
4. Fireman 
The Policeman, Ticket-collector, Soldier and Fireman work for the 
Government. They are government workers. 

What job does a policeman do ? 
A policeman controls the traffic. 

What job does a ticket-collector do ? 
A ticket-collector collects and checks the tickets of the railway passengers. 

What job does a soldier do ? 
A soldier protects the country. 

What job does a fireman do ? 
A fireman helps to put out fires in the town . 

Who pays the Policeman, Ticket-collector, Soldier and Fireman ? 

People pay the government. This is called tax. 

The Policeman, Ticket-collector, Soldier and Fireman get paid salary from this. 

There are many more such government workers.
